Bio

Dr. José Penate is a compassionate and experienced medical practitioner with nearly two decades of dedicated service, delivering high-quality healthcare to patients of all ages.

Born in Guatemala and with proud Spanish heritage, José trained as a doctor in his home country before moving to Australia to pursue a career in rural and community-focused medicine. His journey reflects his belief in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of meaningful connections in healthcare.

Since joining Mansfield Medical Clinic in 2019, José has brought a wealth of experience gained through his work in some of Australia’s leading hospitals, including Grampians Health, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, as well as roles in Emergency Medicine and ICU settings across different states in public and private hospitals.

José values the enduring relationships he builds with his patients, focusing on their unique needs and long-term health goals. His areas of expertise include Emergency Medicine, ENT/Ophthalmology, Musculoskeletal Medicine, Phlebology, and Ultrasound. He is currently pursuing a Diploma in Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine to further enhance his skills and knowledge in these areas.
Guided by the principle that quality care comes from continuous learning, genuine empathy, and ultimately, good old-fashioned medicine, José remains committed to providing healthcare that combines modern practices with timeless values. He embraces cultural diversity and inclusion, believing that understanding and respecting different perspectives enriches the care he provides.

When he’s not practicing medicine, José enjoys cycling, traveling, and savouring local coffee (especially since Guatemala produces some of the best coffee in the world—just ask anyone!). He treasures time with his family and their dog, Milo, and embraces the peace and balance that rural living offers—reminding him of home. If you don’t mind a touch of honesty, José believes good medicine is built on trust, mutual respect, and unwavering dedication to his patients' well-being.
